Preterm birth complications, complications during childbirth, and severe infections are the major causes of neonatal deaths. However, there are a number of other causes of newborn mortality, including pneumonia, diarrhea, tetanus, and congenital birth defects. These other causes account for about 25 percent of newborn mortality.
