India accounts for the greatest burden of newborn deaths in the world. An estimated 1.1 million newborns die each year in India, making up 28% of the global burden. A staggering 55% of under-5 deaths in India are newborns, babies less than 28 days old. Currently, India is not on track to achieve its MDG 4 target by the year 2015. However, recent policy developments surrounding home-based newborn care in rural settings have placed India at a crucial stage to save more mothers and newborns in the coming years.
The Healthy Newborn Network (HNN), in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, explores the situation for India’s most vulnerable mothers and babies, and will in August present an online blog series on translating commitments into action for India’s newborns.
