Neonatal Intensive Care Series

View Resource

Many advances have been made since modern neonatal paediatrics started in the 1970s with the introduction of assisted ventilation. This clinical Series on neonatal intensive care presents the most up-to-date understanding and evidence on how best to resuscitate newborn infants; charts the evolution of modern respiratory care for preterm infants; and highlights the importance of nutrition for growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Preterm birth rates are rising despite efforts of prevention and the optimum care for vulnerable preterm infants has consequences not only for immediate survival but also for long-term outcomes. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia remains a major problem despite many advances. And while challenging, high-quality research in the delivery room and neonatal intensive care units is possible and of paramount importance to guide clinicians to use the best possible practice for newborn and premature infants.
