Dr Ashok Kumar Deorari , has made outstanding contribution to transferring of knowledge and skills in neonatology to physicians and nurses in India & SE Asia region. His team has undertaken innumerable region-wide training programmes in some of the most crucial areas of newborn care: newborn nursing ,neonatal resuscitation; neonatal ventilation; CPAP; kangaroo mother care; quality improvement in healthcare. Under his guidance , the team has developed a participatory learning package of international standards for facility based neonatal nursing, which has been taken to scale in the three states of Gujarat , West Bengal & Karnataka. He conceptualized the need to create uniform structured teaching aids for pre-service and in-service education way back in 1994 and steered development of webinars ( AV lectures ) and teaching aids for important topics on Newborn Health in 2010 , freely accessible on www.newbornwhocc.org Recently 2018 edited learning package for premature baby care using competency based learning methodology and recently 2018 involved in implementation of LaQshya programme with MOH & development partners . As lead person of WHO CC at AIIMS ( 1997-2017 ) with partnering institutions in Asia ,steered development of online e learning platform on Newborn Health for professionals on Moodle learning management system ( LMS ) www.ontop-in.org which runs multiple courses for nurses and doctors for the last six years. With the help of volunteer undergraduate medical students , for the first time in Asia, innovative Apps on smartphones for management of sicknewborn were conceived and rolled out in 2013 . In partnership with American Academy of Paediatrics smartphone Apps on Helping Babies Survive were developed mentioned by WHOHq’s as a innovative tool. These can be downloaded FREE from google play store as WHO CC AIIMS STPs and Essential Newborn Care AAP , HBSECSB or from iTune as WHO CC AIIMS STPs ,NewbornCare , HBSECEB , HBSECSB . He assisted Government of India and UNICEF in operationalization of Newborn Care in the country. Served as short term consultant with WHO/UNDP /UNICEF in establishing Facility based newborn care in DPR Korea , Srilanka , Maldives, Bhutan , Nepal & Timor Leste. He helped Bangladesh , Nepal , Indonesia , Iran and Mauritius in operationalisation of CPAP & Neonatal Ventilation services. He served as Technical expert on multiple occasions to WHO HQ’s for ENAP metrics ,UNICEF HQ’s and WHO Quality of Care Global Network 2014-18. His excellence in research is acclaimed in India and abroad as is evident from research grants , 250 publications , six books and multiple awards & orations . He is Chairman of UG curriculum & Skill Lab at AIIMS ,New Delhi .He has been invited as overseas visiting professor , examiner to multiple universities and facilitated selection of Faculty at multiple institutions of repute in India . He serves as Co Director for Retinopathy of Prematurity programme for India supported by Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust UK 2014-19, Reviewer & Master Trainer for Helping Babies Survive of AAP 2013-16 , member Government of India TAG for Newborn 2014-16 , NHSRC for Devices & Equipment and developing standard treatment guidelines for newborn conditions for India 2014-16 . Recently (2015-18 ) he is involved in steering quality improvement initiatives in India & South Asia and developing Standard Treatment workflow for Newborn packages for Ayushmann Bharat www.pocqi.org
