Born Too Soon: Kangaroo Mother Care Saves Preterm Babies

15 million babies are born too soon every year. Preterm birth is the leading cause of death in newborns worldwide, and now the second killer of children under-5 years. Watch the video about Grace Ngoto’s powerful story to learn how Kangaroo Mother Care helped save her preterm baby Tuntufye in Malawi.

Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a simple, low-cost intervention in which mothers serve as human incubators for their newborns. In KMC a preterm baby is wrapped skin-to-skin to their chests, helping meet the baby’s needs for warmth, breastfeeding, protection from infection and love. KMC is one of the most effective ways to save preterm babies.

Born Too Soon: The Global Action Report on Preterm Birth provides the first-ever national, regional and global estimates of preterm birth. The report shows the extent to which preterm birth is on the rise in most countries, and is now the second leading cause of death globally for children under five, after pneumonia.
