Care of the Small and Sick Newborn Community of Practice – 2021 Vision Webinar

Gardo General Hospital maternity ward is funded by UK Aid. Save the Children started the programme in 2011 and it is due to finish in 2021. The hospital offers services to expectant mothers, and follow up care for babies, including vaccinations, for free and has seen a huge uptake in its services since the programme began. According to Abdikani Hersi Shire, Change Programme Acting Projects Manager, there are around 200 babies delivered here every month. They do 50 C-Sections per month. Before the programme started, most mothers delivered using traditional midwifes, who often don’t have the skills and knowledge and may end up harming the baby. Somalia has one of the world’s highest rates of maternal mortality. If this service didn’t exist, many mothers would die. Save the Children also supports staff training and capacity building. Abdikani Hersi Shire says: “We are working with the ministry of health, strengthening and supporting leadership, working on sustainability and staff capacity. We also work with communities. As a result of our work, the system is stronger than at the beginning – we see greater knowledge among the community and this means increased take-up of services.”
