This report on breastfeeding highlights that rates of early initiation, exclusive and continued breastfeeding are still alarmingly low. The findings should urge us into action: 77 million newborns have to wait too long to be put to the breast, putting them at an increased risk of neonatal mortality. While the presence of a skilled attendant at birth presents an opportunity to provide skilled support for early initiation of breastfeeding, the findings from the report show that in several regions the presence of a skilled provider is not translating into improved practice.
