World Prematurity Day provides an opportunity for the global community to reflect on the effectiveness of our health systems and implementation priorities to reduce the nearly one million deaths related to prematurity each year. This policy brief highlights the critical need to increase awareness, establish policies and take action to ensure that equitable access to human milk is included as an element of essential – and respectful – newborn care, especially for those sick and vulnerable newborns at greatest risk of illness and death.
