While there can sometimes be a tendency in the public health and international development fields to pay a lot of attention to the global conferences and events that come every year, it important to remember what our ultimate objectives are. Creating a world where every one has the best possible chance to thrive. Fundamentally that starts on day one, the day of birth.

Overall, newborn deaths account for over 40% of under-5 deaths worldwide. Many of those deaths occur on the first day of life, when newborns are most vulnerable. According to UNICEF, Liberia’s newborn mortality rate is 34 per 1000 live births.
