Despite a decade of rapid economic growth in India, government-run programmes don’t reach those who need them most. Nearly 75% of newborn mortality can be reduced by improving access to affordable medicines and timely life-saving interventions, the report said.

Save the Children has released its annual State of the World’s Mothers report. It says despite much progress being made in reducing maternal and child deaths, every year, three million babies die within the first month of life. Many just live a few hours.

For the first time, the charity has compiled a separate index on newborn deaths. While deaths of children under five around the world have come down substantially in recent years, there has been little progress on newborns.
